Goliam Mechi Peak is a massive and popular mountain located in the southwestern Rila mountain range in Bulgaria. The peak rises to an elevation of 2,679 meters (8,789 feet) and is the highest point in the Goliam Mechi massif. The peak is easily accessible from the south via the Mechi Prohod saddle, where the Macedonia Hut is located. The hut is a popular base for hikers and climbers exploring the surrounding mountains..
The most common route to Goliam Mechi Peak begins at the Macedonia Hut and follows a well-marked trail to the summit. The hike takes about 4 hours to complete and involves an elevation gain of 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). The trail begins by climbing steeply through the southern slopes of the mountain. After about 1 hour, the trail reaches a saddle, where it turns north and begins to climb more gradually. The trail then crosses a series of grassy slopes before reaching the summit. The summit of Goliam Mechi Peak offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, including the Pirin, Rila, and Slavyanka ranges.
On a clear day, it is even possible to see the Aegean Sea.
